Almar suggested we go to Burlington Coat Factory. I was initially skeptical, as I doubted they would have nice items that I would like there. However, given that I had invested in her expertise, I decided to trust her suggestion. I realized later that it was part of her plan because I had developed a habit of frequenting the same stores like Club Monaco and J Crew, limiting myself without even realizing that other things might suit me too.
Almar had me start by picking out items I liked while she shared her thoughts, and even this aspect was educational. I use my 25 years as a buyer and fashion executive to choose complementary shapes and fabrics for clients, styling and curating an entire look, including shoes, jewelry, and suggestions for hair. One secret hack I use is going to a retailer that’s more affordable than a client's usual stores. For instance, if you're used to shopping at Neiman Marcus, we might go to Off-5th, or even a retailer as accessible as Burlington Coat Factory. This creates an emotional license to purchase pieces that might feel risky. With an affordable price tag, it makes it easier to agree to expand your boundaries. Committing to the entire design, that's the way to "Get the Look" and if I can teach you how to wear the clothes, that makes it your personal style.
